The Timeken Museum of Art

Within the Timken Museum of Art there is a painting, a painting that represents the dilemma within the life of a saint. Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo calls this painting The Torment of Saint Anthony. Savoldo’s painting is framed along a wall of light and dark red arrows with artificial and natural light from above. Within this airy space deemed The Walter Fitch III Room this painting is surrounded by various art pieces from around the world; most of which are religious art pieces. Though each of these paintings are very unique and have much to offer the focus of this essay will be on that of the painting known as The Torment of Saint Anthony.Starting his painting in 1508 Savoldo set out to create an interpretation of St. Anthony’s torment in his own unique way. This 27 3/8Ãâ€"47 in. painting describes St. Anthony fleeing from the torment of demonic creatures and evil spirits as he attempts to reach a land of pleasantry and peace. These Treacherous creatures in the right po rtion of the painting are depicted similarly to the demonic creatures in Hieronymus Bosch’s painting, The Garden of Earthly Delights. In the bottom right portion of the painting there are two creatures inside a coliseum near a boiling kettle that contains a human head inside it.This could be a representation made by Savoldo of a possible result of what happens if one does not repent one’s sins and cannot escape these demons. The entire right portion of this art piece is a representation of Hell and all it has to offer. The burning civilization or town in the right background displays the confines in which demons, evil spirits, and those who must suffer with them dwell. The right foreground seems to be a possible entrance to this demonic place and this is the part of the painting with the most action taking place.Bird Creatures are eating humans, a half bull, half bird creature is carrying another creature with a sack of human body parts, and a ship in an illuminated ca ve tunnel has burning men all over it. While all these creatures loath, eat, and suffer, St. Anthony is trying desperately to escape the confines of these demons and evil spirits. Saint Anthony, a man who gave all his wealth away to devote his life to prayer, was tormented for much of his life by these demons and evil spirits sent to him by the Devil. Savoldo’s painting represents Anthony’s constant truggle in great artistic detail and is a painting that brings those struggles to life. In the bottom left portion of this painting St. Anthony’s hands are clasped in prayer as he moves to a pastoral land where light shines in. He seems to have escaped yet the emotions on his face depict a fear or uncertainty that he will be unable to escape the torments completely. In the middle upper part of the painting a cave dwelling ape creature points a spear towards St. Anthony. This could represent the inescapable reality that St.Anthony will never truly be free of these dem ons and creatures. In the background of the left portion of the painting Savoldo uses atmospheric perspective to create depth to the painting. In the distance, behind St. Anthony, there is a monastery. This monastery is said to be a reminder that St. Anthony is the father monasticism. Savoldo used many colors given the fact that his painting consisted of two very different scenes with a very interesting middle transition. His use of light is very effective and he shows some true skill when creating his painting.The cave tunnel with the ship, for example, was very difficult to create an illumination of light yet Savoldo did it outstandingly. His use of light from the left portion of the painting to the right proves his professionalism and his ability to create effective transitions. The piece is framed at eye level and the best place to stand is directly in front of it in order to see the entire piece for what it is worth. I chose this piece by Savoldo because when I saw it, it immed iately grabbed my attention. Seeing this piece in person made me feel as if I could stay in the museum all day and stare at it, think about it, and enjoy it.I enjoy this piece because it creates a physical, visual event that otherwise wouldn’t be seen by reading the story of St. Anthony. Author of the article, â€Å"Savoldo and Northern Art,† Michael Jacobsen in the book, The Art Bulletin, stated that, â€Å"the right half of [the Torment of Saint Anthony] represents a â€Å"Hellscape† much in Bosch’s manner, while on the left, beyond the mound of earth that divides the picture, is a more conventional northern Italian landscape. St. Anthony flees into this normal world, with a backwards glance at the spectral scene he leaves behind. In the book, Timken Museum of Art, it is stated that, â€Å" Savoldo’s painting is a free interpretation of the physical account of Anthony’s Temptations. † The literature further explains, â€Å" [He] s eems to reinterpret the original source so that the event takes place, not in the original cave setting, but in the natural world he so relished to be depict. † With these alterations Savoldo creates a unique vision that catches a many attention and creates a piece that differentiates itself from the many other depictions of St.Anthony by many artists. I feel that actually visiting a museum and looking at art helps to appreciate it more. Seeing these art pieces that have withstood time is interesting and this unique painting by Savoldo shows that though the world is constantly changing there are some things that live forever. With my visit to the Timken Museum of Art I have become more appreciative of the world of art. Bibliography Michael A. Non-Verbal Communication Essay

Compose responses to each of the following questions in separate paragraphs. 1. Which of the images demonstrates an interpersonal communication exchange? How can you tell? The first image is a perfect example of interpersonal communications because the man and woman are interacting with each other. Even though the communication between them is negative, it is interactive. The body language 2. What types of interpersonal communication are being displayed in the images? Why? The type of interpersonal communications on display in the above pictures are a mix of non-verbal, aware and listen and respond forms of interactive communications. The non-verbal guy in the chair excluded, the other 2 images are of negative interactions. Textual communication also plays a role in communication with others. It is important to recognize that textual information may gain deeper meaning when the text is spoken or viewed in a specific context versus when it is read. In essence, the emotion of anger stresses the person who is holding it more than the person that is on the receiving end of the tirade. â€Å"Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.† — Arthur Miller This quote is one of choices. I believe that Arthur Miller is attempting to express the value of choices in life. The statement about ending up with the right regrets translates to hoping that those regrets that may have hurt, harmed, offended, shunned, etc. people are not the memories that define a life of actions and choices. What I interpret the â€Å"right† regrets to be for example would be, â€Å"I only regret that I couldn’t help more people live their dreams.† â€Å"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.† — H. G. Wells In short, I believe that H.G. Wells is expressing that the lessons from our history as humans are learned from by some (education) while others disregard history’s lessons and repeat the same mistakes of the past. â€Å"The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God. Human beings have always been capable of extraordinary compassion and protection towards their fellow man. In this statement, I believe that he is stressing that we remember what our history is made of as well as attempts to inspire us to be better citizens of America. He also implies that by being so, we as a collective group of patriotic individuals cannot be deterred from our resolve to be better. â€Å"In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the ‘unalienable Rights’ of ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. This is an in your face reference to what was humanly and morally correct and how the country was in disagreement both in law and action of this set of basic rights. Prejudice, Stereotyping and Discrimination on the Web Essay

People think that racism and discrimination doesn’t exist anymore, but surprisingly they do; both existed throughout human history. Discrimination may be defined as a negative, harmful behaviour toward people based on their group membership. Whereas prejudice which is an opinion rather than a fact; is a negative attitude toward members of a group, that is often very strongly held. Stereotypes are individuals’ beliefs that members of a group share particular attributes; someone might think that Arabs are terrorists, or doctors are intelligent and compassionate. Unlike prejudice and discrimination-terms that refer to negative attitudes or actions- stereotypes can be either positive or negative. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict will never end, and each individual has a different opinion about it. Ahmed Ramie is a Moroccan-Swedish writer and Holocaust denier, also the founder of the radio station Radio Islam which now operates as a website. Radio Islam is a website owned by a group of freedom fighters from different countries in support of Ahmed Ramie’s global struggle. Radio Islam is a website that is trying to promote better relations between the â€Å"West† and the Arab and Muslim World; it’s against racism of all kids and forms also against all kinds of discrimination of people based on their color of skin and faith. Meta-Stereotypes are a person’s belief about the stereotype that out-group members hold concerning his or her own group; for example Arabs would believe that Jews hold a negative stereotype of their group (terrorists). Meta-stereotype differs depending on each group; Arabs may hold negative stereotypes against Jews (Occupants). Each group may hold different opinions; Palestinians may consider that their victims of the chosen people (the Jews). Each group believes that they hold the right opinions about others and some of them would never change their opinion. Another hate site that depicts hate towards Jews is Kinsman Redeemer Ministrie, Pastor Mark Downe is strongly honest with his opinion towards Jews, and his title is why we hate Jews. Scapegoat theory is a theory proposing that prejudice occurs because members of dominant groups use discrimination against members of weak target groups to vent their frustration and disappointment. People become frustrated during difficult economic time and tend to take out their frustration on weak targets, for example Jews in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s when Hitler roused anger against Jews by claiming they had too much economic power and blaming them for the impact of the worldwide depression on Germany. Jews were an outcast that many Germans disliked, but when Hitler started his campaign of propaganda, some Germans followed his league. But there’s a difference between these two sites; Radio Islam is against Zionism not Judaism, where Kinsman Redeemer Ministries talks specifically about Jews and lists different reasons why people should hate them. One man started this propaganda and changed the whole world, now Hitler is gone but people still carry on with his campaign and spread the hate and racism among others. People should be more considerate about other peoples’ opinions and beliefs and not hurt them by hate websites or picking on them. Each person in this world is a unique individual who shouldn’t be judged based on his/her religion, color, sexuality or ethnicity. Prejudice against overweight women is common now a day, people who are overweight are the targets of widespread prejudice and discrimination, and they may find difficulties finding a job or travelling. Some groups hold hate towards other overweight people, they believe that the fat gene is not an excuse and obesity should not be common among us. If an obese saw a hate website about overweight groups they would feel ashamed and upset that they would eat more rather than fixing their problem. â€Å"Old-Fashioned† Prejudice is one of the forms of prejudice; the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is name of three distinct past and present right-wing organizations in the United States. After the American Civil War the KKK was created on December 24, 1865, this group represents the White Christian civilization they believe in many concepts and rights that should be essential to civilized and moral society. Some people might find them as ignorant and racist but they are certainly convinced about their beliefs and actions towards illegal immigrants and black people. On one of the hate websites KKK they mention white all the time that others might be offended and bothered, their mission is to live in a country with white people only. Again Frustration caused this group it started after the War before that people didn’t mind black people. Martin Luther King has become a human rights icon and he represented all African Americans; he fought for their rights since the 50’s. Throughout the history till the present African Americans still might feel discriminated and an outcast. Stereotypes is a huge effect on people and how they feel about others, a kid might not think of a Black man in the middle of the night as a killer or a thief but as this kid grows older and starts watching television and surfing the internet this persons’ thoughts will change and develop hate towards Black people and somehow fear. In all I would like to wrap up this assignment with saying that I’m totally against judging a book from its cover, some people might hate all Jews because some of them occupied Palestine or some Jews would hate all Germans because some of them slaughtered them. But I think that’s not only racist but it’s ignorant, all people should be treated the same and those hate websites can convince teenagers to turn into a hater and I’m surprised how they exist from the first place.
